The Heart of a Leader

Following a Leader

I recently watched the movie Eragon, twice in one day actually. Sometimes when I am working on web design (my side job) I put a movie on in the background. I found parts of this movie especially inspiring and insightful. One line in particular.

For those of you who have not seen the movie, it is a fantasy that tells the story of a dragon, Saphira, and her dragon rider, Eragon, that seek to overcome an evil king and restore the world to peace. The classic story of good versus evil set in a magical world.

At a certain point before Eragon an Saphira go into battle for the first time against the evil king’s army Eragon turns to Saphira and asks her why she chose him as a rider. Eragon confesses that he is not without fear about the task facing them. Saphira’s response touched me more deeply than any other line in the movie:

You choose a leader for their heart.

You choose a leader for their heart. How true, and how touching. What do you think this means to choose a leader because of their heart? (I know that gramatically Saphira should have said you chose a leader for his or her heart, but it was the underlying message that touched me).  What kind of heart would you want in a leader? What kind of hearts have you seen in great leaders throughout time?
